Allegations Against Manufacturers:
Almost sixty lawsuits have been filed against manufacturers such as L’Oreal, Soft Sheen, Dark and Lovely, and Luster Smooth Touch. Plaintiffs nationwide claim that these products cause cancer and other serious health problems, leading to a class action lawsuit filed in Chicago. Ingredients commonly found in chemical hair relaxers, such as parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, and the toxic chemical DEHP, have been identified as potential carcinogens, with uterine cancer and breast cancer being the most common types linked to their use.

Connection to Cancer:
A recent study by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) found a link between hair straightening chemicals and uterine cancer. The study, involving data from over 33,000 women, revealed that those who used chemical hair straightening products were almost twice as likely to develop uterine cancer compared to non-users. These findings have prompted a wave of lawsuits across the country, with plaintiffs alleging various health issues resulting from hair relaxer use.

Hair Straightener Lawsuits:
The groundbreaking 2022 NIH study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute provided the first epidemiological evidence linking chemical hair straighteners to cancer and other health issues. This study initiated a series of lawsuits, with the first filed by eleven attorneys in 2022 on behalf of Jenny Mitchell, a Black woman from Missouri, in Chicago’s U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Plaintiffs claim that hair relaxer use led to the development of uterine cancer, breast cancer, endometriosis, or fibroids, and individuals diagnosed with such health concerns may be eligible for compensation.

Companies Involved:
Prominent companies involved in the class action lawsuit include L’Oreal, manufacturer of Dark & Lovely and Ultra Sheen; Namaste, LLC, manufacturer of ORS Olive Oil Hair Relaxer; TCB Naturals/Godrej Consumer Products, manufacturer of Just For Me; and Strength of Nature Global, LLC, manufacturer of Motions.
